'Fings what I like to read.

So recently one of my housemates lent me 'The Girl With All The Gifts' by M.R.Carey. It was an really entertaining book, addictive, easy to read, great concept. Real nice. I enjoyed it throughly. Now part way through me shoving my nose deep in it's pages the same housemate pipes up and says she's got another book to lone me thats along the same sort of lines story/genre wise but also that it's waaaaaay better.... Damn the girl weren't wrong!

Don't get me wrong. 'The Girl With All The Gifts' was good, like I said, entertaining, thing was it was sort of like fast food. Really pleasurable at the time but you finish it too quickly and aren't left overly satisfied afterwards. There's not a whole lot of sustenance there, no complex flavours.

 'The Passage' by Justin Cronin however, is some sort of serious Michelin Star shit. Honestly it's one of the best books I've read in a long time. Read the blurb if you want the full low down but really all you need to know is that this book is enthralling, awesome, not for the faint of heart and it will grip you, really get you good. I hate revealing too much when chatting to people about books and films so I shall say this : little girl, agents, army, virus, violence, survival. Boom.

Apocalyptic / Post-apocalyptic settings can be hard to handle without heading too far afield into the wildly unbelievable but Carey does it perfectly. Comparable to Steve King's 'The Stand' (another fantastic read FYI) in terms of pace and style this book really hit the spot for me. I found myself staying up in a 'just one more chapter' fashion on more than one occasion. 

This book is incredible. So incredible in fact that when I'd devoured it I immediately went out and got a hold of the second in the trilogy 'The Twelve '. It did not disappoint. Equally as wicked as the first and Book, equally as addictive.

The only bad news is that number three isn't due for release until 2015. Rubbish.
